Crazy Horse Leather: What It Is, How It Ages and How to Care for It
Share
Crazy Horse is full-grain cowhide with a waxed and oiled finish. It scratches easily, heals easily and gets darker and richer the more you use it. Every StowPilot MacBook sleeve is made from it.
What Crazy Horse leather is
Crazy Horse is real full-grain cowhide. Full-grain means the natural surface of the hide is kept, not sanded off, so the leather keeps its own texture, pores and small natural marks.
The tannery then finishes the hide with waxes and oils. That finish gives Crazy Horse its look: a soft, slightly uneven color that looks lighter where the leather is bent or rubbed and darker where it is not. The name describes this finish. It is not horsehide.
When you press or fold the leather, the oils and waxes move and the color changes for a moment. Leather makers call this the pull-up effect. It is why no two sleeves look exactly the same, and why photos never show every shade.
How it ages
Crazy Horse changes with use. This is a general guide, not a guarantee: how fast it changes depends on how often you handle the sleeve, your skin, and where you keep it.
| Time | What you will usually notice |
|---|---|
| First days | Waxy, slightly uneven color. Small light marks show easily. |
| First weeks | Hand oils start to smooth the surface. The flap and edges get a little darker. |
| 1–3 months | Scratches and small marks appear. Light ones fade when rubbed. Edges and corners soften. |
| 6 months | Clear patina: a deeper color and a soft shine where your hand touches the sleeve. |
| 1 year and more | A color and surface that belongs to you. No two sleeves end up the same. |
On a sleeve, the first changes appear where your hand holds the flap and along the edges.
Before and after: 60 days
The same sleeve, new and after 60 days of use.

After 60 days the sleeve has scratches on the front and on the flap, and a few darker marks. This is normal for Crazy Horse: the wax finish shows marks easily. Light scratches can be rubbed out with a fingertip. Deeper ones stay and become part of the patina.
Scratches and marks: what is normal
Light scratches on Crazy Horse are normal. They are part of its character, not a defect.
- Fine scratches. Rub them with a clean fingertip. The warmth of your hand moves the wax and the mark fades.
- Deeper scratches. They usually stay, but they soften and blend into the patina over time.
- Natural marks. Small scars, grain differences and color variation come from the hide itself. Full-grain leather keeps them.
- Color differences between sleeves. Each hide is different, so two sleeves of the same color can look slightly different.
How to care for it
Crazy Horse needs very little care. Five simple rules are enough:
- Clean with a soft dry cloth. For dust or a light mark, a slightly damp cloth is fine.
- Keep it away from soaking. If the sleeve gets wet, blot it with a soft cloth and let it dry at room temperature.
- No heat. Do not dry it on a radiator or with a hair dryer, and do not leave it in direct sun for long. Heat dries the leather and can fade the color.
- No alcohol or household cleaners. They can strip the wax finish.
- Conditioner is optional. If the leather starts to feel dry, use a small amount of leather balm. Test it on a hidden spot first, because balm can darken the leather.
FAQ
Is Crazy Horse real leather?
Yes. It is full-grain cowhide with a waxed and oiled finish.
Is it waterproof?
No. The wax finish gives some protection against light moisture, but the leather is not waterproof. Wipe spills off quickly.
Are scratches a defect?
No. Light scratches are normal for this leather, and most fade when you rub them with a fingertip.
Why does my sleeve look different from the photos?
Every hide has its own color and grain, and the finish changes with light and movement. Small differences are natural.
Will the color change?
Yes. It usually gets slightly darker and glossier where you touch it most. That change is called patina.
Can I get my name or initials on the sleeve?
Yes. We emboss or engrave your name or initials on the leather. See the sleeve page on stowpilot.com for the options.
